Honoring the Courage and Sacrifice of Seafarers

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has commemorated the International Day of the Seafarer, honoring millions of seafarers worldwide and remembering those who have tragically lost their lives in the line of duty.

Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, the Secretary General of the IMO, delivered a heartfelt message emphasizing the determination and sacrifice of the 2 million seafarers who keep our global trade afloat. Despite the harsh realities of piracy and conflict zones, these courageous individuals continue to serve, ensuring that essential goods reach every corner of the world.

Recent attacks on international vessels in the Red Sea have claimed the lives of at least four seafarers since November 2023. Among these tragic incidents, three lives were lost aboard the MV True Confidence, and one crew member perished on the MV Tutor. The IMO has strongly condemned these attacks, emphasizing that such acts of violence can never be justified.

To further support seafarers, the IMO launched a social media campaign, encouraging seafarers to share safety tips with images using the hashtag #SafetyTipsAtSea on platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, X (Twitter), and Instagram. This campaign invites organizations, shipping companies, and the entire maritime community to show their support.

Filipino seafarer Ms. KC Chin-Sood contributed valuable recommendations for women in the maritime industry, emphasizing the importance of professionalism and setting boundaries for personal safety. Another Filipino seafarer, Mr. Yrhen Bernard Sabanal Balinis, highlighted the crucial role of communication for situational awareness and psychological safety on board.

Happy Seafarers Day 2024.
