61,000 seafarers reports corruptions in over 1000 ports in last decade
Today, we're diving into a crucial issue that affects seafarers worldwide: corruption in ports. The Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN) is at the forefront of this battle, striving to eliminate the rampant corruption that often goes unnoticed but significantly impacts our industry.
Unmasking Corruption: The Seafarers' Plight
In a revealing interview with the BBC, MACN highlighted the daily struggles seafarers face with corrupt demands in ports. Crew members frequently encounter requests for cigarettes, food, or other goods to ensure smooth processing. These demands, while seemingly minor, violate international anti-corruption regulations and place undue pressure on seafarers.

The Origins and Growth of MACN
Founded 11 years ago by a small group of maritime leaders, MACN aimed to create a corruption-free maritime industry. Today, the network has grown to include over 200 firms worldwide, united in their collective action against corruption. By implementing anti-corruption principles, sharing best practices, and collaborating with both government and non-government organizations, MACN is making significant strides.
Raising Awareness: MACN's BBC Feature
As part of their awareness campaign, MACN recently appeared on the BBC to discuss maritime corruption. They revealed that over the past decade, they have received 61,000 reports from more than 1,000 ports across 150 nations. Last year alone, 5,183 reports were filed, highlighting the ongoing severity of the issue.
The Human Cost of Corruption
The MACN shared harrowing stories with the BBC, including a ship captain who was taken from his vessel at gunpoint for refusing to hand over cigarettes to port officials. Other cases, though less dramatic, still reflect the pervasive nature of corruption, with crew members recounting incidents like a port official attempting to take a 5kg cheese block.

Fear and Silence: The Unspoken Reality
Many seafarers fear reporting corruption, worried it might affect their future employment opportunities. Despite official policies against such practices, corruption persists, often overlooked by shipping firms more focused on maintaining schedules than addressing these unethical demands.
Global Efforts and Progress
The International Association of Ports and Harbours has acknowledged tangible progress in combating port corruption, citing initiatives in the Indian subcontinent, the Gulf of Suez, and Africa. MACN is actively working with governments in nine countries to address corrupt practices, but they admit there is still much work to be done.
Conclusion: A Call to Action
As we navigate these challenging waters, it's crucial for the maritime community to support initiatives like MACN. By standing together against corruption, we can ensure a fairer, safer environment for all seafarers.
